After today’s workshop, my perception of textiles has changed immensely. Before starting this workshop, I thought textiles was strictly working with textures and certain materials to make a physical textile, whether it be for fashion sculpture etc. I never knew how much drawing was involved in planning a textile. I always imagined textiles was just weaving and forming different materials into a textile, and at certain point that comes into play, but today I’ve learned immensely about the planning behind a textile. I enjoyed the process of drawing the most random of objects, and gathering certain shapes, elements etc from those objects, and with the acetate, layering them on a projector to create a prototype for a textile. I enjoyed how organic the process was, because I think I work in a kind of trial and error way, so working through this process was very enjoyable. Working in a group was very enlightening as well. I was able to collaborate in a very easy way with my group mates to make a really interesting textile. Combining all of our individual drawings and different colored acetates, everything came together very nicely. We also had a great idea to use some old fabric I had brought in, drape it on me, and project the textile onto the fabric. It truly helped us realize what the textile would potentially look like. I wouldn’t have been able to come up with this idea without my group mates which is a testament to the fact that collaboration broadens my thinking to enable me to think more creatively.
