I believe there is a specific point where action becomes art. I think that point depends on when the artist determines it themselves. I think when an action is recorded, drawn, visualized etc. it technically becomes art. It is all up to the artist to decide when they’re going to make the transition between action and art, when they decide to present their work, an action, as art. In today’s class, my final piece was definitely a generic action, but since I had the intention to create art, and by deciding to present my action in a specific way to an audience, it became art. I think that is the specific point where action becomes art.

I loved the use of my smartphone as a medium. In today’s day and age, we’re constantly using our smartphones as a personal canvas, painting a picture of ourselves to display to others, via facetime, social media, etc. We’re constantly performing for our phones and we don’t even realize it, so having the ability to take that every day action and twist it to present it as art is very exciting. I really enjoyed using my smartphone as a medium so much that I want to explore this idea further. I didn’t know anything about 4-D today but after today’s workshop, I am definitely considering specialising in this pathway.

This has advanced my understanding of how a camera lens observes the world around me because I have a better understanding about how we perform for our camera lens everyday. Like I said in the previous paragraph, we are constantly inadvertently performing for our cameras. We do it so much we don’t even realize what we’re doing it is second nature. It is the perfect medium to morph into a piece of any kind, whether it be performance art or moving image, it is like art for the future. I also now understand that a camera lens provides a very interesting perspective to the world around me, its a unique way to observe surroundings. It has the ability to distort images and memories through editing, specific software etc. which I think is a very interesting concept that could possibly be explored in further projects.
